Choosing where to stay in Seoul for your first trip

Start with the places you plan to visit, then choose a hotel base. If you are deciding where to stay in Seoul for a short first trip, compare Jongno or Insadong, Myeong-dong, the Seoul Station area, and Hongdae. Each answers a different question: an easier palace day, shopping near your room, a simpler rail arrival, or more time around Hongdae.

A neighborhood name cannot tell you how far you will carry your bags. Check the hotel's actual entrance and the station exit you would use. A room that looks close on a map may involve a road crossing, stairs, or a walk you would rather avoid after a flight.

Jongno or Insadong for a palace-focused trip

Begin your search here if Gyeongbokgung, Gwanghwamun, Insadong and Bukchon are the main reason for your visit. The Seoul Tourism Organization groups these places around the historic center. Staying in this area can make it easier to return to your room between a palace visit and an afternoon walk.

Compare the hotel address with the palace entrance and your planned route, not just the district boundary. Jongno covers more ground than one short walk. For Bukchon, check its tourist-restricted area and visiting window separately; choosing a nearby hotel does not change the rules for visitors.

If you are choosing where to stay in Seoul around that historic day, map the airport trip as well. You may prefer a central sightseeing base even if it means a transfer on arrival. Make that tradeoff before committing to a room.

Myeong-dong for shopping and a Namsan day

Myeong-dong fits a plan built around central shopping and a visit to Namsan. Seoul's official first-visit guide includes both. Choose a location that lets you get back for a break without retracing a long walk.

Check which station or airport-bus stop serves the property. Two hotels using the same neighborhood label can have different arrival routes. Look at the final walk with your luggage and consider the time you expect to reach the hotel.

An early flight also matters when deciding where to stay in Seoul. Before buying a nonrefundable room, check the first usable airport service and the hotel's check-out arrangements. A convenient evening location is only one part of the booking.

Seoul Station for travel days built around rail

AREX's Express Train links Incheon Airport with Seoul Station without intermediate stops. Its All Stop Train also serves Seoul Station. This makes the area worth considering if airport rail is central to your plan, or if an onward train leaves from this station.

Look up the entrance you will actually use. The station name alone is not a walking route, and reaching the hotel is part of the journey. Compare the final walk with the daily trips you would make to your sightseeing areas.

For a short visit, an easier arrival may be worth some extra travel on sightseeing days. If most of your time will be in one other district, compare a hotel there before deciding. Check the current AREX timetable against your flight rather than assuming the service runs whenever you need it.

Hongdae for repeated time in the neighborhood

Hongdae is a sensible starting point if its shops, arts scene and places to eat feature on more than one day of your trip. The official Seoul guide describes the area around Hongik University as a place for cultural events, performances and fashion shopping. Check individual venues if you want to see a particular event.

The AREX All Stop Train serves Hongik University Station. The Express Train does not. For a hotel near that station, the all-stop route can avoid a connection through Seoul Station.

When weighing where to stay in Seoul, compare the exact hotel-to-station walk and your trips to the palace district or Myeong-dong. A Hongdae address does not necessarily mean a short walk from the airport-rail platforms. Ask the property about room noise if you are sensitive to it; this guide does not rank hotels or claim that every street has the same atmosphere.

Check the room after you choose the area

Shortlist a few properties in the area that fits your route. For each, review the full price for your dates, taxes and fees, cancellation deadline, bed arrangement, and check-in time. Verify stairs or elevator access with the property if they affect your trip. These details belong to the individual booking.

Save your arrival route and the hotel address, including its Korean version if the property provides one. Keep a backup for a delayed flight. The best answer to where to stay in Seoul is the place whose location and booking terms work for your actual trip.
